Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera)
As the name indicates, Himalayan balsam originates in theHimalayas; it grows preferentially near water bodies and spreads quickly due to the fruits’ expelling mechanism.
Dense growth of Himalayan balsam leads to a depletion of accompanying plants. In forests, the rejuvenation of trees and shrubs prevents this process.
Along river banks, Himalayan balsam suppresses the native shore vegetation. As a consequence, the open spaces, left in fall after the die-back of the stems, increase the risk of erosions.
